The house on cielo was custom built for French actress Michele Morgan in the early 1940's. According to her autobiography, she was living in the house in sept. of 41. The house frightened her from the start. The large expanse of windows across the front always made her feel someone was walking on the "veranda" along the front and coming into the house late at night. She said she rarely slept well in the house. She heard noises coming from the living room that sounded like things being moved and brushed against. One night when she heard these noises she went outside and around the house to peer in. Nothing and no one was there. She was so afraid to be there alone at night that a female friend moved in for awhile but the house scared her also. Michele Morgan stated it was not the location or the isolation that frightened her so, it was the building itself. This made no sense to her as the home was brand new, never lived in before and built specifically for her. At any rate she did not keep the home long. She sold it at the end of ww2 and moved back to France.

The house when Michele had was decorated colorfully and beautifully. There are some pics on the internet of her brief time there and they show more of the interior rooms than any I have seen since that time. There are two videos on you tube that show these pictures . one is Michele morgan-the summer of 42 the other is michele moran and the beautiful cielo drive.
Now I have a question. Does anyone know who owned the house from the time Michele Morgan sold it to the time Rudi Altobelli bought it in the early 1960's? I have never been able to find this out. Thanks everybody!

A lot of movie stars lived there for short periods of time. The house was close enough to the film studios where the stars worked yet far enough away for them to have some peace and privacy while not filming, so many stars rented the house out while they were filming a movie. Cary Grant and Dyan Cannon spent their honeymoon there in 1965. And Henry Fonda also lived there for a time. Here's a couple photos of Michele Morgan in the house. She had it decorated very beautifully!: Lillian Gish lived there in 1946 while filming Duel in the Sun. Some pics of Lillian there: And here's another photo of the living room as it looked in the 1940's during Michele Morgan and Lillian Gish's time there: And British actress Samantha Eggar (one of my favourites! ) also lived there in the early 1960's. Some pics of Miss Eggar there (sorry for the small size and watermarks, I found these on eBay):

to buy the land and have the house built cost Michele Morgan $20,000.00. Rudi Altobelli bought the property in the early 60's for $80,000.00 and he sold the property for one million six hundred thousand dollars. Does anyone know who bought the property from Miss Morgan or who Altobelli bought the property from? Between these times there is much information on who rented the place at various times but not who the actual owner (owners) were. thanks everryone.
thank you audreyfan for the pictures the interior of the house was awesome in michele's time . and I wonder who did the landscaping on the property that just fit so perfectly?

I don't know how long Sharon and Roman would have stayed at Cielo. They were looking for a place to buy actually. Debra Tate said in an interview that Sharon's dream home was the house on summitridge road that they were living in and going to buy from Patty Duke.Patty Duke backed out of the deal at the last moment and said she needed the house back. That startedd a mad dash to find a new place get moved and settled in before both Sharon and Roman had to leave for Europe on seperate film assignments.Debra said the cielo house was "good enough". All told Sharon spent only 8 weeks at the cielo house and Roman even less than that.

I don't think they left Summitridge because Patty wanted the house back. I'm pretty sure that her husband at the time (pre-John Astin) wanted to charge Roman more for the house than they had initially agreed on. So Roman and Sharon left.

Firstly, wonderful photos Audrey! I don't think I had ever seen the color versions. I've always thought the Cielo Drive house was very cozy and comfortable looking. I have somewhat mixed feelings about it being torn down - it was a lovely home with a lot of history, but it was also the scene of a truly horrific event.
Secondly, Kristen, I was wondering if you or anyone else knows how Sharon and Patty Duke's relationship was after Sharon and Roman left the Summitridge property? IIRC, while living at Summitridge, one of Patty Duke's dogs escaped and Roman ran after it - but never found it? I honestly cannot remember if that story was regarding Patty Duke's dog or if it was Sharon's dog so please forgive me if I'm incorrect. I know Patty Duke has only said positive things about Sharon, but I was wondering if their relationship was strained at all after these events?

I don't know the facts behind their friendship once Sharon and Roman moved out.
The reason the house deal fell apart was because their significant others were being stubborn and couldn't agree on a price. So I think Sharon and Patty were both able to roll their eyes and not have any bad blood with each other.
When it comes to their friendship in general once the deal fell apart, I tend to think that they remained friends, but lives and careers kept them from spending much time together. VOD, for all of its flaws, managed to get Sharon some pretty good acting reviews, and the only award nomination for acting that the film received. For Patty on the other hand, it very nearly destroyed her career. She was ripped to shreds by critics and threw herself back into her career. A reason she left her house to begin with is because she went to New York to work, so being on opposite ends of the country would have made a close friendship somewhat difficult to maintain. By 1968 or so, Patty was dealing with a lot of personal problems which didn't have much to do with her career. She had been abused sexually as a child, and had definite drug issues. Her first marriage, which was never a good situation, finally ended in 1969. Beyond that even, it would still be years before her bipolar disorder was diagnosed and treated. She had a lot of demons around '68-'69 and struggled to keep them hidden, and it caused her a lot of problems, personally and professionally.
Comparing her life at that time with Sharon's, they were total opposites. Sharon was in a pretty good place in her life, while Patty was struggling to keep her head up. In that situation, it's easy to drift. To my knowledge, the last time they were photographed together was at Sharon and Roman's wedding reception in LA, and that was held in February of 1968.
I think that if Sharon had been around when Patty's struggles became really apparent (around 1971 during the issue of Sean Astin's paternity which played out in the press), I think that Sharon would have made it a mission to reconnect with her and provide support for her. I can also see how Sharon would have been a real champion of Patty when she went public with her bipolar diagnosis.

Thank you for your response, Kristen! You really are a wealth of information!
I agree with you, I feel like Sharon would have been very supportive of Patty and championed her struggle with mental illness. Sharon has always struck me as a very compassionate and empathetic person.
